Pinot grigio is a clone of Pinot gris that started in Italy.  Pinot gris is a white wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera.  Pinot gris is grown around the world.  Pinot Gris is less intensely aromatic than the other whites.  Typically they have a pleasing melon, pear, citrus and almond aromas and flavors.  Pinot Grigio is medium-bodied and refreshing, with crisp, sometimes bracing acidity.  In contrast, Pinot Gris from Alsace is fuller-bodied and less acidic giving it a softer, rounder, more plump mouthfeel, with spice and ripe fruit flavors.
